Set up in 2023, Sheffield Food Chain is a charity with a mission of nourishing and supporting the community, delivering regular packages of meals made from food surplus to individuals and families affected by food poverty.
What We Do
Cook.
We cook nutritious vegetarian and vegan meals using food waste donated to us by local wholefood traders including, Beanies & Le Crunch. Every meal is prepared and cooked from scratch by a team of volunteers, then packaged up and frozen, ready to be delivered.
Pedal. All our deliveries, from collecting food surplus, to delivering frozen meals to homes, are made by our team of volunteer cyclists. Using e-cargo bikes, we are able to deliver far and wide across Sheffield city.
Serve. We believe everyone should have access to nutritious, sustainable food. We work closely with local charities to serve members of the community affected by food poverty, many of whom can’t access other services because of caring responsibilities or disability. We aim to deliver 5 frozen meals per home on a weekly basis across areas including Sharrow, Highfield, Broomhall and Nether Edge.
Organisations We Work With
Our Story
Sheffield Food Chain was born from the ‘Food Delivery Project’, a branch project of Foodhall’s community cooking, eating and event space in the centre of Sheffield. The two projects shared the mission to tackle food waste and food poverty in the community, particularly during the unprecedented challenges of the 2020 pandemic.
Following the closure of Foodhall in late 2022, Food Delivery Project relocated to a new home at Cemetery Road Baptist Church, enabling it to continue its vital weekly activities: collecting food surplus, batch-cooking, delivering frozen meals and redistributing surplus food to partner food charities across Sheffield. However, in mid-2023, the trustees of Foodhall came to the decision that the Food Delivery Project was not sustainable in its own right, making the decision to close the project down.
Despite this setback, Food Delivery Project had fostered a community of committed volunteers who believed they could continue its legacy, albeit in a new form, as a self-sufficient, volunteer-run operation.
Sheffield Food Chain was born. Through the unwavering collective effort of our volunteers, the kitchen buzzed once again with activity, freezers started to fill, and hope was rekindled. In late 2023 we were officially registered as a charity, enabling us to continue our mission of nourishing and supporting our local community through a sustainable food system. With access to nutritious and affordable food being a significant challenge for many, the need for food support has never been more vital.
